There are many contributing factors to achieving a healthy and radiant smile. At Dobbs & Adkins, DMD, LLC, we’re always searching for new ways to deliver the best dental care to you and your family. During each visit, we are looking for these five indicators of good dental health and base our recommendations on our findings.
Pink, Healthy Gums
Gums are the bedrock to healthy teeth. Your gums should be pink, not white or red. If your gums are tender or swollen, it could mean you’re developing an infection. This bacteria can lead to tooth decay, damage at the root level, and bad breath. Gums should be firm to the touch and sit flush against your teeth. If there are pockets or flaps along the gumline, you’re inviting bacteria to collect. Flossing is a great way to keep your gums in top shape. If you’re new to flossing, your gums might bleed, however, if you get into the habit of flossing on a daily basis that bleeding will cease. All in all, healthy gums are an excellent indicator of a healthy body.
Neutral Breath
Want to know what your breath smells like without toothpaste or mouthwash? Floss between a few teeth or scrape your tongue and take a whiff. Food particles and bacteria team up and directly impact how your breath smells throughout the day. Bad breath, or halitosis, can be a sign of other health issues, such as diabetes. Keep your breath fresh with regular brushing, flossing, dental check-ups, and don’t forget to brush your tongue too.
Teeth Spacing & Jaw Alignment
Teeth that are straight and aligned are much easier to brush and floss, as there are fewer places for bacteria to collect. Teeth crowding can affect chewing and are associated with bruxism, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), gum disease, and migraines.
Healthy Tongue, Lips, & Cheeks
We don’t just check your teeth and send you on your way. We look at your entire mouth from your lips, cheeks, tongue to how your jaw aligns. Oral tissues are an excellent indicator of your overall health, and some issues may manifest in your mouth like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and thyroid problems. Healthy tissues are pink, moist, and firm while showing no signs of swelling or tenderness.
Strong Teeth
In every exam, we check the strength of your teeth and any dental restorations. If there is a weak spot in your teeth, bacteria will find it. Tooth enamel acts as the first line of defense against bacteria and plaque. It’s the hardest substance in your body and protects the inner layers of your teeth from hot and cold sensitivities. Protect your enamel by limiting sugary foods which can produce plaque, and from hard foods, which can crack or chip your enamel.
